Dim Sum

Standard

A couple of weeks ago, I posted some recommendations for the English High Tea selections. Today, I would like to introduce Dim Sum – the Cantonese style small dishes brunch (AKA: Yum Cha, which mean drink tea). It is a very common life style in southern China like Guang Dong, Hong Kong and Macau. In New York, it is not uncommon to see these Dim Sum place since most Chinese who own business in Chinatown are mostly from southern China.

Tea is typically served with Dim Sum dishes and it is mean to be a very slowly eating meal. Most people in southern China would take a newspaper or magazine and spend the whole morning or noon time at the dim sum restaurants. Well, mostly elderlies… You could hardly find young people spending time at dim sum during weekdays. During the weekend though, it is a great place to go and enjoy a tea time with families.

There are a couple of dim sum place I would recommend in Manhattan Chinatown:

  1. Golden Unicorn 18 East Broadway at Catherine St Image
  2. Red Egg 202 Centre St at Howard St

3. Dim Sum Go go  5 East Broadway between Catherine and Oliver St

4. Cha Chan Tang :45 Mott St, New York, NY 10013

There are more places to be explored in NYC. Take a weekend morning, try these places and see how you’d like them!

Simple way for Home made egg custard tart

Standard

Girls love sweet treats, instead of buying those treats from bakery shops, it is also easy and fun to make it on your own!

Here I would like to introduce a very simple way to make delicious egg custard tarts:

What you need:

  1. Whole mill (or 2% is healthier) 120g
  2. Two eggs
  3. Sugar: depend of personal preference, I would usually do two tsp
  4. Six tart skin ( can be bought from any asian market)
  5. Pre heat the oven to 250 degree

How to do it:

  1. Stir two eggs in a bowl, make sure to stir well both the egg white and yolk
  2. Add 120g of milk into the bowl and two tsp of sugar
  3. Stir very well in one direction, stir until you see the foam
  4. Then let it rest for about 15 minutes until the foam are gone
  5. Pour the liquid mix in to the tart skin, about 80% full would be fine
  6. Put the six tarts in the oven and bake for 30 minutes
  7. Take them out until the surface turn golden

Tips:

To make sure all the side has best heat, you could take the tarts out after 20 minutes and than rotate the positions. Then bake for another 10 minutes. If you like fruity tarts, you could also cut fruits into little pieces and add them to your tarts.

The English Afternoon Tea – the Elegant Savory

Standard

Afternoon tea, originally from England ,it is a light meal typically eaten between 4 pm and 6 pm. Observance of the custom originated amongst the wealthy classes in England in the 1840s. By the 19th century, afternoon tea developed to its current form and was observed by both the upper and middle classes.

For the food alone, afternoon tea isn’t a steal. Nowadays, people all around the world take afternoon tea as a special treat for themselves. i would say they pay the money for the atmosphere more than the food alone.  And, of course, the luxury to lounge around for hours with no bother—an experience that’s well worth it. The standard afternoon tea consists of four elements:

  • Savory: Tea sandwiches and savory tarts
  • Scones: Most often served with devonshire cream, lemon curd, and fruit jams
  • Sweet: Cakes, petit fours, fruits tarts, eclairs
  • Tea:  It’s very important that the teas are brewed to order using real loose leaves, not tea bags. If you’re going to pay this much, nothing is worse than seeing a limp tea bag or two hanging out of the teapot.

I love taking the time off and going to afternoon tea with my girl friends. Usually, I would go find a afternoon tea place twice a month to just explore new things and simply enjoy the weekend relaxing time. Now let me introduce some great places for afternoon tea in the States and in China.
